Assessments of Prognostic Factors on Sudden Deafness

Abstract
Author analyzed 34 cases(38 ears) of sudden deafness which were treated with steroids, vasodilators and plasma expanders from September 1988 to January 1993 and evaluated the prognosis with using categorical judgement and improvement rate. The hearing recovery and prognosis were no significant differences between above two methods.
The obtained results were as follows;
1) The prognosis by age was not significant, but female had better prognosis than male.
2) Unilateral cases had better prognosis than bilateral cases, but there was no
significance in affected side.
3) There was the best prognosis in cases which were affected in summer and the
worst in cases who were affected in spring.
4) The prognosis was good in cases who were treated within 1 week after onset.
5) The porgnosis was good in cases of initial hearing threshold less than 80dB and poor in cases more than 81dB.
6) In pure tone audiogram, ascending pattern had the best prognosis and total loss pattern had the worst prognosis, The hearing loss in lower frequencies, the better prognosis.
7) In cases with dizziness, URI history and general diseases, prognosis was poor.
